Self Managed vs. Plan Managed vs Agency Managed: What’s right for you?

When you receive your National Disability Insurance Scheme plan, one of the first decisions you’ll make is how your funding is managed.

This choice affects how much control and flexibility you have.

The Three Options Explained

1. Self-Managed
You manage your own funding and pay providers directly.

Pros:

  • Maximum flexibility

  • Choose any provider (registered or not)

  • Control over spending

Considerations:

  • Requires organisation and admin skills

2. Plan-Managed
A plan manager handles invoices and payments for you.

Pros:

  • Less admin

  • Access to both registered and non-registered providers

  • Financial support included in your plan

Considerations:

  • Slightly less direct control than self-managed

3. Agency-Managed (NDIA Managed)
The NDIS pays providers directly.

Pros:

  • Minimal admin

  • Simple to use

Considerations:

  • Only registered providers can be used

So, Which is Best?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Many participants prefer plan management as a balance between flexibility and support.

Final Thoughts

The right choice depends on your confidence, support network, and preferences. And remember—you can request changes at your next plan review.
