Our name reflects who we are and what we stand for.
Aruga is a Filipino word meaning to nurture.
Āwhina is a Māori word meaning helper, support, assistance.
Together, Aruga Āwhina means “Nurturing Support.”
Our name honours both Maria’s Filipino heritage and Amanda’s Māori whakapapa, and reflects our shared commitment to culturally respectful, heart-led care.
The Meaning Behind Our Name
What Makes Us Different?
Founded on strong Filipino and Māori values, Aruga Āwhina is grounded in family, respect, dignity, and community connection.
With over 10 years of combined experience in the care industry, our directors are hands-on and actively involved in service delivery. We believe support should be personal, empowering, and built on genuine relationships — not just service agreements.
We understand sensory needs, emotional regulation, trauma-informed care, behavioural supports, and the importance of cultural safety.
We work closely with Participants and Support Coordinators to ensure consistency, transparency, and participant-centred outcomes.
Our Why…
We didn’t start Aruga Āwhina simply to run a business.
We started it because we believe people deserve better.
Better communication, consistency & care.
Aruga Āwhina exists to provide nurturing support that feels safe, empowering, and truly person-centred.
